5-Inch FPV Drone Parts List: What You Need and How to Check It All Fits

5-inch FPV parts list diagram with eight fit checks and a quadcopter frame layout

Most failed first builds do not fail because of soldering. They fail because two parts were never going to work together. This guide lists what a 5-inch FPV quad needs, then walks through the checks to run before you order.

If you have not decided whether to build at all, read RTF, BNF or Build It Yourself first.

The parts list

  • Frame: the carbon fibre structure everything bolts to.
  • Motors: four of them. Check the listing, because many are sold singly.
  • Stack: a flight controller and a 4-in-1 ESC that mount together.
  • Receiver: links the quad to your radio.
  • Video system: a camera and VTX, or a digital kit that combines them.
  • Antenna: for the VTX, and never power a VTX without one fitted.
  • Propellers: buy several sets.
  • Batteries and a charger: covered in our LiPo guide.
  • Radio and goggles: the two purchases that carry forward to every later quad.
  • Tools: soldering iron, solder, flux, hex drivers and a smoke stopper.

The eight checks before you order

1. Does the stack fit the frame?

Stacks mount on a square hole pattern, usually 30.5 x 30.5mm or 20 x 20mm. The TBS Source One V6 5 Inch takes both, which is one reason it is such an easy first frame. Check the frame's stack pattern against the stack listing, not the other way round.

2. Do the motors fit the arms?

Most 2207-class motors use a 16 x 16mm M3 pattern. Larger motors change this: the 2807-size GEPRC EM2807 uses 19 x 19mm. Use screws of the right length too. A screw that is too long can reach the windings and short the motor.

3. Does the stack handle your battery voltage?

The SpeedyBee F405 V5 OX32 55A and the GEPRC TAKER F405 BLS 60A V2 are both rated 3-6S. Exceed a stack's rating and it will not survive the first plug-in.

4. Does the motor KV suit that voltage?

On 6S, 5-inch motors usually sit around 1700-1950KV. On 4S they need to be higher, around 2300KV and up. Put a 4S motor on 6S and it runs too hot. Our motor guide explains why.

5. Can the ESC supply the current?

Compare the motor's peak current with the ESC's continuous rating. The iFlight XING-E Pro 2207 lists 35A burst, well inside a 55A or 60A per-channel ESC. Leave a healthy margin, because ESC heat is what you are managing.

6. Does the receiver match your radio?

The receiver and the radio must use the same link. An ExpressLRS radio will not bind to a FrSky receiver, and ExpressLRS 3.x and 4.x do not connect to each other, so both ends need the same major version. See our radio guide for details.

7. Does the video system match your goggles?

Analog works with analog, and each digital system works only with its own. This catches people out even within one brand: the Walksnail Avatar HD Pro Kit does not work with Walksnail Ascent goggles. Our video systems guide helps you choose. Check the antenna connector as well, since VTXs use SMA, MMCX or IPEX.

8. Do the props fit the shaft and the frame?

Most 5-inch motors use a 5mm shaft. Popular choices include the HQProp Freestyle 5x4.3x3 V2S and HQProp Juicy J37. Our propeller guide covers the numbers.

An example analog build

Here is one set of parts that passes all the checks above, on 6S:

Tools, and the one that saves money

A portable iron such as the SEQURE SI012 Pro Max, TBS solder and TBS flux will cover the whole build.

The iFlight Smart Smoke Stopper is the part beginners skip and regret. It sits between battery and quad on first power-up and cuts the current if there is a short, so a wiring mistake costs you a few minutes rather than a stack.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a 4S battery on a 6S build?

A 3-6S stack will power up on 4S, but 6S motors will feel slow and flat. Choose the cell count first, then buy motors to suit.

Do I need a flight controller and ESC separately?

Not usually. A stack gives you a matched pair. On smaller builds an AIO board combines both on one board.

Can you check my parts list?

Yes. Email info@aeroflow.in with your list and we will look it over before you order.
